Got new tires put on the 4Runner this morning, General Grabber AT2s. I like.
It’s pouring down rain and they are already much nicer to drive on through puddles than the old maybe-a-third-tread-left tires (National ‘Commando’) that were on it; and unlike the old ones these don’t have any nails in them and are installed with the lettering the right way around. They also have enough tread to comfortably drive through snow.
(Yes I replaced the battery yesterday (see other post) and all is well; also as can be seen by the being-indoors, the RX7 has gone into storage for the winter, sadly)

Good call on the Grabber AT2s. I’ve absolutely loved mine for the last 45k miles. Finally getting replaced next week, with Grabber ATx’s ( AT2 replacement ).

I had a shop try to tell me they quit making AT2s in the beginning of the year, and they refused to order me a set (despite their website saying they could have them in a few days, the guy insisted that since their local warehouse didn’t have any, they were discontinued and sold out and nobody could get them ). I ended up getting these elsewhere without any drama; they’re date coded 39th week of 2018 so I’m pretty sure they didn’t stop making them in the beginning of this year.
I’ll be interested to see how the ATx
s are
, I’ve not seen a set yet. I’d imagine they’re pretty similar though. Whatever the first shop tried to sell me instead of the AT2s (they claimed they were the replacements) looked like a highway all-season.

If the old tires were plain all-seasons, say sayonara to your MPGs. I swapped out all-seasons for AT2s on my old Hemi WK Grand Cherokee and it took the mileage from bad to atrocious. Good tires, but they’re heavy as boat anchors.

If you are comparing passenger tires to LT you are going to see some mileage change .. You are also getting a completely different kind of tire so ymmv literally.
I put K02 E on the old taco and went from a 35lb tire to a 54lb tire.. yes mileage was affected, but so was traction, towing stability, and being able to go wherever you liked..
Next try a MT..

The ATXs look identical to the AT2s, so I’m hoping for the best.
Seems they always discontinue the tires I really like.
Grabber AT2s
Discoverer ST
Fuzion HRi
Just to name a few.

I don’t have that WK anymore. It was my second car in WI along with a 135is, which I then consolidated into a 335xi. I wouldn’t have done MTs though.
I put the AT2s on because I wanted something severe snow duty rated, but not full-on snow tires because I used the WK as my year-round comfy cruiser option if I didn’t feel like cramming into the 135is. Didn’t want to burn up snow tires in warm weather.
If I were in the same position now, I’d probably get a more on-road focused tire that has the severe snow duty rating, several of which have come out since then. Like, say, the BFG Advantage T/A Sport LT .
